Kosovo Book Project
On February 5, 2005, volunteers from Lexington Catholic High School and the Lexington chapter of Altrusa International, members of the Kosovar community in Lexington, KY, and several IBP board members, packed over 15,000 books to send to two community libraries that were burned during the 1999 Kosovar conflict. These libraries are located in the capital city of Pristina, Kosovo and Gjakova, Kosovo, where the idea for the "Kosovar Book Project" originated. This project was made possible by the generosity of the Gregg Challenge Grant and all of the loyal IBP supporters who donated shipping funds to make the dream of literacy possible in Kosovo. The International Book Project would also like to thank Colgate University and Dr. Antonia Young for the generous donation of 2,500 Higher Education textbooks that were included in the shipment. Further, this shipment would not have been possible without the dedication of Besnik and Ardena Gojani who tirelessly picked books from our warehouse shelves for the shipment, and who also helped IBP to raise funds and awareness about the project. Kudos also go to our tireless warehouseman, Tom Zemsky, who oversaw the picking, packing, and all logistics related to this large shipment of single copy books.
The shipment was loaded into a container at the IBP warehouse by members of the University of Kentucky's Farmhouse Fraternity on March 7, 2005. Six volunteers donated their muscle to load the sea container headed for Pristina, Kosovo. Thanks to everyone who made the dream of literacy a reality for thousands in Kosovo.
