International Book Project Sends Books to Guatemala On January 23, 2006, the International Books Project, in partnership with Child-Aid and Brother's Brother, both humanitarian aid organizations, shipped over nine thousand Spanish language textbooks to Escuela Normal Pedro Molina School in Chimaltenango, Guatemala. IBP, Child-Aid and Brother's Brother are working as part of the Guatemala Library Project, a grassroots initiative that establishes school libraries in impoverished areas across that country as means of curbing rampant illiteracy and providing greater educational opportunity. Bound for Chimaltenango, a town perched in the Guatemalan highlands and home to a predominantly indigenous population, the organizations' shipment will provide much-needed textbooks to primary school students living in a marginalized region where educational materials are scarce. Approximately three quarters of Guatemala's indigenous population cannot read or write and many children in the area are hired as laborers as early as age seven. The Guatemala Library Project has founded twenty-eight libraries in rural and impoverished communities since its inception in 1992. IBP is pleased to be part of this initiative and excited about the impact these books will have on the lives on Guatemalan children. Back to news |
