The Harriet Drury Van Meter Charitable Society

The Harriet Drury Van Meter Charitable Society"Books open doors to decent jobs, to self-improvement, to creativity, to deeper faith and a wider understanding to our cultural heritage. Parents in poor countries understand the tremendous advantages that education brings and are willing to make great personal sacrifices in order to educate their children...But they need books..."
Harriet D. Van Meter, Founder, International Book Project

The Harriet Drury Van Meter Charitable Society is a special group of supporters who have made a commitment to the future of the International Book Project (IBP) by naming IBP in their estate plans. The Harriet Drury Van Meter Charitable Society honors this special group of supporters in perpetuity by permanently displaying your support on a plaque displayed at the IBP warehouse and by working with a partnering organization abroad to memorialize your gift.

Harriet Drury Van Meter realized that books are the paramount resource for individuals abroad seeking knowledge and education.

Your gift to the Harriet Drury Van Meter Charitable Society will ensure that these children get the books they need to learn and become productive, creative members of our global society. Please contact Lynda Jeffries, IBP Executive Director, for more information about becoming a member of the Harriet Drury Van Meter Charitable Society at 1-888-999-BOOK (2665).

International Book ProjectBequests

Planned gifts help ensure that the International Book Project will have the financial resources to operate well into the future. There will always be an inherent need for books thus there will always be a need for the books provided through the International Book Project.

A bequest through your will is a customary way of making a planned gift to the International Book Project, to be used as you designate. You should consult with your attorney to ensure that your wishes are specified in your will and it is prepared to execute your desired estate plan considering probate, income, gift and estate taxes, and other matters of concern.

Any specific assets can be left to the International Book Project in your will. You can specify assets, specify a certain dollar amount, or specify a certain percentage of your assets to be used by IBP for the purpose that you designate.

You should specifically state in your will how you wish the bequest to be used by the International Book Project. Gifts made to the International Book Project with no restriction will be used to support the ongoing operation of all the organization's programs by being added to the endowment fund, which provides IBP with a valuable and reliable source of support year after year.

Bequests through your will to support the International Book Project should be made to the:

International Book Project Endowment Fund
1440 Delaware Avenue
Lexington, KY 40505

Benefits

  • You provide generous support to IBP.
  • Your gift may reduce your estate taxes.

Gifts of Insurance

Life Insurance can be used in several ways to benefit the International Book Project, such as:
  1. Giving a paid-up life insurance policy you already own by naming the International Book Project as the new owner and beneficiary. Your estate tax will be reduced and you qualify for a charitable contribution that approximates the cash value of your policy.
  2. Giving a life insurance policy on which you are still paying premiums by naming IBP as the new owner and beneficiary. Each future premium paid by you through IBP counts as a charitable contribution, as well as the approximate cash value of the policy; and your estate taxes may be reduced.
  3. Purchasing a new life insurance policy with the International Book Project as the owner and beneficiary of the policy. The premiums you give to IBP to pay on the policy will be deductible by you as a charitable contribution and the policy will be excluded from your estate, which saves estate taxes.
  4. Naming the International Book Project as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy that you own. The proceeds will be deductible from your estate as a charitable contribution.
  5. You should specifically state in your will how you wish the gift of insurance to be used by the International Book Project. Gifts made to the International Book Project with no restriction will be used to support the ongoing operation of all the organization's programs by being added to the endowment fund, which provides IBP with a valuable and reliable source of support year after year.

Gifts of Insurance that are designated to support the International Book Project should be made to the:

International Book Project Endowment Fund
1440 Delaware Avenue
Lexington, KY 40505

Benefits
  • You provide generous support to IBP.
  • You may qualify for a federal income tax deduction.
  • Your gift may reduce your estate taxes.

Kids in CeylonRetirement Plan Gifts

Qualified retirement plans, such as 401(K), 403(b), individual retirement accounts (IRA's), Keough and other retirement plans are taxed when withdrawn, for income tax purposes, and are also subject to estate taxes. This double tax on retirement plans can often leave only a small percentage of the plan for your ultimate beneficiaries. Because of the tax issue involved, today many donors are considering retirement plan assets to give to the International Book Project instead of other types of assets.

If you wish to make a gift from your accumulated retirement assets, ask the administrator of your plan for a Change of Beneficiary form, and indicate the amount or percentage of assets you wish to go to the International Book Project. Your beneficiary can be changed at any time in the future as your needs or wishes change. In some circumstances, the consent of a spouse may be necessary.

You should specifically state in your will how you wish the retirement plan gift to be used by the International Book Project. Gifts made to the International Book Project with no restriction will be used to support the ongoing operation of all the organization's programs by being added to the endowment fund, which provides IBP with a valuable and reliable source of support year after year.

Gifts from your individual retirement accounts that are designated to support the International Book Project should be made to the:

International Book Project Endowment Fund
1440 Delaware Avenue
Lexington, KY 40505

Benefits
  • You provide generous support to International Book Project.
  • Federal income tax on the retirement plan will be avoided.
  • Federal estate tax will be reduced.
  • You can change the beneficiary at any time.

Charitable Remainder Trusts and Gifts of Residual Interest

A charitable remainder trust is a deferred giving arrangement under which you irrevocably transfer property (cash, securities or real estate) to a trustee. You retain the right to the income from the trust, either for life or a specified term of years, and at the end of that time, the trust principal becomes your gift to the International Book Project.

A gift of residual interest gives back in a different way. You may donate your residence but retain the right to occupy it for life, or give a valued artwork and continue to enjoy it during your lifetime. In each case you receive a donation receipt for the present value of the "residual interest" you have given to the International Book Project.

Please contact the International Book Project directly for more information about setting up a Charitable Remainder Trust or about gifting residual interest income.

Benefits
  • You receive an immediate tax receipt for the residual value of the donated asset.
  • You receive an annual income from the assets in the Trust. In the case of a Gift of Residual Interest, you retain the use of the gift for the rest of your life.
  • Gifts of appreciated property can be structured to avoid Capital Gains taxes.
